That's right folks, 365 new pics of my life in 2013. Lucky you! Some challenges come with themes or ideas, but I think I'll just go along with what's inspired for that day.
Day 1
Black-eyed peas are a Southern New Year's tradition I first learned about after moving to Austin -- Google tells me the tradition was brought to the Carolinas and Georgia from West Africa via the West Indies -- believed to bring luck and prosperity".

Here's the recipe I used:
- Leftover Christmas Ham and pulled pork from Kickin' Boot (ham hock, andouille sausage, and bacon also work); diced into small pieces
- One bag of black eyed peas, rinsed and soaked in 8 cups of water over night
- 6 cups of chicken or vegetable stock
- Two cans of petite diced tomatoes
- 1/4 cup of brown sugar
- "splashes" of: worcestershire sauce, hot sauce and cider vinegar
- Cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper to taste
Serve with corn bread.
