My street was blocked off yet again today, but this time for very unfortunate reasons. An apartment building diagonal to Amanda and I caught fire. I want to reassure anyone concerned, that the fire on 6th and Detroit is not our apartment. Our building is ok and we are safe. We were both at work at the time the fire broke out. I understand that some neighboring homes were asked to evacuate, but it is unclear if this was applicable for our home. The good new is that all residents and pets made it out of the structure safely.
According to reports, the fire started when two plumbers were working with pipes in the attic. The regrettable thing about the neighborhood Amanda and I live in, is many of the buildings are historic landmarks. With older apartments, come higher risks and more work to keep things up to code.
Although I'm still a bit shaken from having this happen so close to home, I am also thankful things were not any worse. Below is a picture of our building, proof that Amanda and I are safe and sound.
