From Belt Addiction to Book Addiction

There is another thing I can't let go of these days: the Twilight book series by Stephenie Meyer. This is a love story between a teenage girl Bella, and her vampire soul mate Edward, who seem to have a very Romeo and Juliet-esque situation (the Shakespear piece is actually mentioned many times). The two are constantly fighting for their love against other vampires, werewolves, and Edward's inherent urge to um, "drink" her.

I first learned about the saga at Megan and John's wedding. It turns out their ceremony and reception site, The View Point Inn, is the location for some of the scenes from the upcoming movie based on the book.

With all four volumes prominently displayed in the front entrance, I asked Megan what she knew about the odd feature at the Inn. She explained the filming and briefly mentioned that those of her friends who read the series couldn't put the novels down.

Since the book is about vampires and I am adamantly against story lines that feature anything other than humans (Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars... I get lost in figuring out which creature is what) I didn't plan on finding any interest in this new cult classic.

I'm not sure what changed my mind. Maybe I was looking for a ghoulish story to get into the spirit of Halloween, or that I knew if the book held no interest for me, at least Nick would end up reading it. After all, he read through the last Harry Potter book (700+ pages) in a day and a half.

Since I cracked the first pages of Twilight one week ago today, I have finished it and the second novel, New Moon. Not only am I glued to these books, but Vampires are just about the only thing I know how to talk about. When Nick asked why they turned into bats, I simply replied that it was "just a rumor and not true."

I just purchased the last two books, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn this evening. I'm a little hesitant to start the next one, since it seems once I begin the book, I can't stop. Aside from losing time where I could be accomplishing productive things like writing my own original pieces, I've had to endure the endless "hypocrite" title from Nick. Now that I am obsessed with fictitious creatures, I've had to take back all the snide remarks made about his Harry Potter.

It's my understanding that all four books will be made into movies. Twilight will be released on November 21. I can't wait! I will probably camp outside of the movie theatre to elbow my way past the dorky tweens in an effort to get the first tickets.

If you don't hear from me in the next week or so, please don't panic, I'm just working my way through the next 1200 pages. I will rejoin the human race once I have read through the entire series.
