Gone Too Soon

The world of fashion endured a tragic loss today with the death of Alexander McQueen. He committed suicide just nine days after his mom passed away. I can't begin to understand how pain and sadness can drive someone to take his own life, especially while so many are fighting to live. I can, however, celebrate the genius that McQueen brought us and the influence he had on our fashion today.

McQueen was well known for his dramatic and cutting edge fashion shows. The British designer pushed the envelope in ways I cannot imagine. In one particular runway show butterflies actually released themselves inside a clear "cocoon" worn over the head and torso of each model. I myself will remember him for the influence he's had on our daily trends: Skinny jeans, leggings, feathers, bold colors, gothic black, extremely high heels and platforms all saw an origin on the catwalk of McQueen shows years ago. While at the time they seemed so avant guarde, each look has found its way into mainstream fashion.

Thank you Alexander McQueen for impacting the world for the better. You have left this world far too soon and the beauty you created will be greatly missed.
